Yet another reason that defunding the CBC is a terrible idea. They are an incubator and engine of Canadian culture and they also export it, reflecting our many facets to the world. Now is the time to invest in our own culture.
Until English Canadians truly care about their own stories and narrative, the national project remains in peril. Quebecers care and so culture can be a political issue here, the politicians know this, and so attention (and actual dollars) is paid. Canada is already difficult: the “national” narrative is vastly different in the two languages. And despite that here we are. It would be quite something if the majority could translate the existential threat now facing it with an active or deeper probing of the methods and tools needed to better embrace our stories in all forms and media.
